Selling crypto in Morocco: from USDT to dirhams, in the right order

Buying crypto from Morocco is easy compared with getting the dirhams back. The money lands in a Moroccan bank account that has to make sense to your banker and, since 2026, possibly to the Office des Changes. Here is how people cash out, what it costs, and the order of steps that protects you.

Before you sell

  • No exchange pays out dirhams to Moroccan banks. Residents cash out by selling USDT on P2P to a buyer who pays MAD.
  • In our most recent snapshot, buyers paid about 10.22–10.29 MAD per USDT on Binance, Bybit and OKX.
  • Payment arrives by bank transfer in most cases, or as a CashPlus pick-up for smaller amounts.
  • Release the crypto only after the money is cleared in your own banking app, never on a screenshot.
  • The Office des Changes sent formal notices in 2026. Keep records of every sale.

Why cashing out is the hard part

The usual way to sell crypto in Morocco is to convert it to USDT and sell the USDT on a P2P marketplace such as Binance P2P. The buyer pays dirhams into your bank account or through CashPlus. Release the coins only once the money has cleared. When we last checked, buyers paid about 10.22 to 10.29 MAD per USDT.

Buying crypto from Morocco moves dirhams out of your account. Selling moves them in, and incoming money is what banks are trained to look at. Since 2017 the Office des Changes has treated virtual-currency transactions as a breach of exchange regulations, so no exchange has a dirham payout channel and no bank will accept a transfer from an exchange.

What remains is the reverse of the P2P purchase. You become the seller. Someone in Morocco who wants USDT pays you dirhams from their bank or through a cash agency, and the exchange releases your USDT to them from escrow. The mechanism is the same as buying, explained in our P2P guide, but the risk flips sides. As a buyer your risk is a seller who does not deliver. As a seller your risk is a payment that is fake, reversed or stolen.

The two cash-out rails

Bank transfer to your account

This is how most sales settle. You post or answer an ad, and the buyer sends a transfer from Attijariwafa, CIH, BMCE, Banque Populaire or another bank to the account you specify. On Binance, ads accepting Attijariwafa and CIH dominate both sides of the market, so a buyer at your own bank is usually available, which makes the transfer near-instant. Order limits are set by each ad, commonly up to 24,000 MAD, with some going to about 108,000 MAD.

CashPlus pick-up

Some buyers pay by sending a cash transfer through a CashPlus agency in your name, which you then collect with your ID. At our latest check we counted 56 Binance ads on the sell side mentioning Cash Plus, against 37 on the buy side. Wafacash and Western Union appeared in a handful. It is useful if you prefer not to receive many transfers into your bank account, or if you live in a town where CashPlus is the nearest financial counter. The network had more than 5,200 agencies at the end of 2025, and our city guides describe the local options.

The catch: you cannot confirm a cash transfer the way you confirm a bank credit. Collect the cash first, then release. If the buyer insists that you release before collection, cancel.

How much will you get for your USDT?

On our snapshot, the best Binance buyers paid 10.26 to 10.29 MAD per USDT, OKX 10.27 to 10.28 and Bybit 10.22 to 10.29. Compared with the aggregator USD/MAD rate of about 9.73 at the time, sellers were receiving roughly 5.6% more than the official dollar would give them. That is the flip side of the premium buyers pay, and it is one reason some people sell in Morocco rather than abroad.

The fees are small. Answering an ad as a taker costs nothing on Binance P2P. If you hold Bitcoin rather than USDT, you first swap BTC to USDT on the spot market, at about 0.1%. Example: a graphic designer in Rabat sells Bitcoin that brings 1,000 USDT after the swap. At 10.28 MAD she receives about 10,280 MAD. At the global spot price converted at the official rate, the same coins would have shown a “value” of only about 9,730 MAD. Our Bitcoin price in dirhams page explains that gap.

The safe order of steps

  1. Convert to USDTSwap your BTC or other coins to USDT on spot. The USDT/MAD book is far deeper than BTC/MAD.
  2. Move USDT to your P2P walletOn Binance this is an internal transfer from Spot to Funding. It is free and instant.
  3. Choose a buyer, or post an adPick verified buyers with long histories. Set a minimum order and require that the buyer’s name match their bank account.
  4. Wait for the money, then check it yourselfOpen your own banking app. A screenshot, an SMS or a “pending” notification is not payment.
  5. Check the sender’s nameIf the transfer comes from someone other than the verified buyer, refund it and cancel through the platform.
  6. Release and archiveRelease the USDT, then save the order number, the chat and your bank statement line together.

Every scam we see in Moroccan cash-outs breaks one of these steps. The most common is a fake receipt sent within seconds of the order. The second is a “triangle” trade, where a fraudster pays you with money stolen from a third person, who later reports the transfer. Our scam guide shows examples.

Will your bank ask questions about crypto money?

Your bank sees every incoming transfer. Several transfers a week from different people, each a round number, look like a business. Banks are the largest source of suspicious-transaction reports to the ANRF. A 2024 case reported by Hespress started with a Casablanca bank flagging repeated transfers that investigators later tied to crypto trading.Hespress, Apr 2024 We found no rule that banks must close accounts over P2P, and no sourced report of a bank freezing accounts as a policy. Still, a frozen account during an inquiry is a realistic risk once stolen money is involved.

Practical advice from what we have seen: sell larger amounts in fewer trades rather than dozens of small ones. Keep your income account separate from your trading account if you have two, and be ready to answer a banker’s question calmly. You cannot show a licence, because none exists, but you can show where the funds came from: exchange statements, the original purchase records and the transaction IDs.

You may also see P2P traders labelling transfers “Ecom” or similar, a practice TelQuel described in 2023. We do not recommend it. A false transfer description does not make the transaction legal and can make any later explanation harder.

On tax, the DGI has issued no ruling on crypto gains, so we do not quote any rate. The records you keep for your bank are also the ones a tax adviser would need. Our crypto tax guide for Morocco sets out what is known and what is not, and the legal status page follows draft law 42.25, which had not been adopted at the time of writing.

How do you sell large amounts of crypto?

Above roughly 100,000 MAD, P2P becomes awkward: you need several buyers, each sending a large transfer, and each one increases the chance of a bank question. International OTC desks quote a fixed price for big blocks, but they settle in USD or EUR, never in dirhams, so they only help people with a legitimate foreign account. Our OTC guide covers the minimums and who can use them.

Selling abroad: the cleaner route for MRE

If you are a Moroccan living in France, Spain, Belgium or the Netherlands, the simplest way to turn crypto into dirhams usually avoids Moroccan P2P altogether. Sell on an exchange regulated where you live and withdraw euros to your local account by SEPA. Then send money home the way you send any remittance: a bank transfer, or a service such as Wise, which supports transfers to dirham bank accounts. Your Moroccan family receives an ordinary transfer from abroad, and your local tax return covers the gain under that country’s rules.

Exchanges with European entities make this straightforward. CEX.IO, operating since 2013, runs CEX.IO Europe S.L. in Spain and a UK-registered entity, alongside its US FinCEN registration and state licences. Note that it does not offer card withdrawals for accounts based in Morocco; the European rails apply to users verified in a supported European country. Compare options in our exchange reviews and in our ranking of the best crypto exchanges in Morocco.

Expats in Morocco who are paid from abroad face a mixed picture. Keeping crypto proceeds in a foreign account may be simple under your home country’s rules, but bringing large sums into Morocco should go through normal banking channels with documents ready.

FAQ

How do I sell Bitcoin in Morocco?

Most people convert their Bitcoin to USDT on an exchange, then sell the USDT on a P2P marketplace such as Binance P2P. The buyer sends dirhams to your Moroccan bank account or, less often, to a CashPlus agency for pick-up. You release the USDT only after the money appears in your account.

Can I withdraw crypto directly to a Moroccan bank account?

Not directly. No exchange offers dirham withdrawals to Moroccan banks, because none is licensed in Morocco and banks do not process crypto payouts. The dirhams always arrive as a transfer from another person, which is why P2P is the only practical route for residents.

How much do I get for 1,000 USDT in dirhams?

Roughly 10,260 to 10,290 MAD at our latest check, when the best P2P buyers on Binance paid about 10.26 to 10.29 MAD per USDT, before any fees. Buyers on OKX paid a similar 10.27 to 10.28 MAD. Rates move daily, so check the live order book before you sell.

Will my bank ask questions about crypto money?

It may. Moroccan banks must report unusual transactions to the ANRF, the financial intelligence unit, and repeated incoming transfers from many people are a typical trigger. Keep exchange statements, order histories and transaction IDs so you can show where the funds came from if asked.

Do I pay tax when I sell crypto in Morocco?

There is no official answer yet. The tax administration (DGI) has published no ruling on crypto gains, so there is no rate to apply. That does not mean the question will never arise. Keep records of your purchase price and sale proceeds, and speak to a tax adviser before large disposals.

What is the safest way for an MRE to sell crypto?

Usually, selling abroad. A Moroccan living in Europe can sell on an exchange regulated in their country of residence, withdraw euros to a local bank account, then send money to Morocco through a normal bank or money-transfer service. That keeps the Moroccan side clean and avoids both P2P fraud risk and awkward questions from a Moroccan bank.
