The short answer
- Custodial vs self-custody is the real choice. An exchange account can be frozen; a seed phrase can be lost. Pick the risk you can manage.
- Trust Wallet, MetaMask, Binance Web3 Wallet and OKX Wallet all work from Morocco with no country block.
- For savings, use a Ledger or Trezor from the official store. Budget for customs (a 32.25% figure circulates, but it is not official) and avoid second-hand units.
- Plan inheritance: tell a trusted family member that the wallet exists and where the backup is, without handing them the words.
- Move USDT on TRC20 or BEP20, not ERC20, unless the receiver requires it.
Custodial or self-custody: the choice behind every wallet
For most people in Morocco the best setup is two wallets. Use a self-custody app such as Trust Wallet, or the wallet built into Binance or OKX, for small amounts and P2P use. Keep long-term savings on a Ledger or Trezor bought from the official store. The apps work from Morocco with no country block.
A crypto wallet does not hold coins. It holds the private keys that prove the coins on a blockchain are yours. The question is who holds those keys.
With a custodial wallet, the exchange holds them. Your USDT on Binance, Bybit, OKX or CEX.IO sits in an account the platform controls. You log in with a password and two-factor code, and if you forget them, support can restore access. The flip side is that the platform can also freeze the account. In Morocco this is not theoretical: P2P traders regularly report accounts locked after a disputed payment, a bank complaint or a request for documents. And if the platform fails, as FTX did in 2022, you become an unsecured creditor.
With a self-custody wallet, you hold the keys, usually as a recovery phrase of 12 or 24 words. Nobody can freeze the coins, and nobody can help you if you lose the words. The phrase is the money. Anyone who reads it can empty the wallet from anywhere in the world.
Our view: most Moroccan users need both. Keep the amount you trade this month on an exchange you trust, and move anything you plan to hold for longer into a wallet you control. If you choose an exchange, prefer one with licences you can check abroad; our ranking of the best crypto exchanges in Morocco sets them out. CEX.IO, for example, has operated since 2013 with US FinCEN registration and an EU entity in Spain. Like every other platform, though, it holds no Moroccan licence, and it does not accept Moroccan card deposits.
Which wallet apps do Moroccans use most?
None of these apps blocks Morocco, because self-custody software is not a financial account. We found no published figure on how many Moroccans use each one, so the order below reflects how often they come up in P2P practice, not market share.
Trust Wallet
Trust Wallet is a mobile and browser wallet that supports a long list of blockchains, including the three that matter for USDT in Morocco: TRON, BNB Chain and Ethereum. It is the usual answer when a P2P merchant says “send to your own wallet”. Setup takes two minutes: install from the official store page, create a wallet, write the 12 words on paper, confirm them. Its weak point is the same as every hot wallet’s: the keys live on a phone that also runs WhatsApp, games and whatever links people send you.
MetaMask
MetaMask is the reference wallet for Ethereum and EVM networks such as BNB Chain, Arbitrum or Polygon. It is the one you need for DeFi apps, NFT marketplaces and most airdrops. Its design is centred on EVM chains, so check whether your version supports TRON before you rely on it for TRC20 USDT. Many users in Morocco run MetaMask on a laptop for DeFi and Trust Wallet on the phone for P2P.
Binance Web3 Wallet
Built into the Binance app, this is a self-custody wallet that sits next to your exchange account. Binance describes it as using multi-party computation (MPC): the key is split into shares rather than stored as a single seed phrase, with a recovery method you set up yourself. The convenience is real, since moving funds from your exchange balance to the Web3 wallet takes one tap. The trade-off is that your self-custody wallet lives inside the app of the exchange you are trying to diversify away from. If Binance restricts your app access, recovery depends on the backup you created.
OKX Wallet
OKX Wallet works the same way: a self-custody wallet available inside the OKX app and as a browser extension, with a classic seed phrase option and support for many chains. It is a good fit if you already buy USDT on OKX P2P, which showed about 290 USDT/MAD ads in our most recent snapshot; our OKX review looks at that desk. As with Binance, keep a written backup that does not depend on your OKX login.
Exchange-linked wallets (Binance, OKX)
- One-tap transfers from your exchange balance
- Familiar interface if you already trade there
- Built-in swaps and network selection
Independent wallets (Trust, MetaMask)
- Recovery may depend on app access
- Less separation from the exchange
- Mixed interfaces confuse custodial and self-custody balances
Both columns are compromises, not verdicts. The real security comes from your backup, not the logo.
Can you buy a Ledger or Trezor in Morocco?
A hardware wallet keeps the private key on a small device that never exposes it to your phone or computer. You confirm each transaction on the device’s own screen. For anyone holding the equivalent of a few months’ salary or more in crypto, it is the upgrade that matters most.
Getting one into the country
We found no official Ledger or Trezor store in Morocco and no authorised reseller with a Moroccan address. Ledger’s support page on shipping countries returned no content when we checked, so we could not confirm that Ledger ships to Morocco. Trezor’s help centre says delivery is not available everywhere and that prices exclude customs fees. The buyer pays any duties and local taxes, and DHL or UPS sends a payment link before delivery. The device ships from the EU, declared as a USB device under HS code 847170, at the full order value including shipping.Trezor support
How much will customs cost? A figure of 32.25% is widely repeated: a flat duty on online purchases of any value entering Morocco. Its source is the shipping page of the retailer iHerb, not Moroccan customs (ADII).iHerb Morocco shipping We could not confirm it against an official tariff, and the real charge can depend on the product category and the courier’s own fees. Treat it as a budgeting rule of thumb. We also found no reported case of customs seizing a hardware wallet.
In practice, Moroccans use three routes:
| Route | Typical cost | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Order from the official store, courier delivery | Device + shipping + duty | Delivery may be refused; return shipping not refunded |
| Bring one back from Europe (MRE, travellers) | Device price only | Declare it if asked; keep the receipt |
| Buy from a local seller or marketplace | Often marked up | Tampered device or pre-set seed |
Why second-hand and reseller devices are dangerous
The classic scam is simple. A seller on Facebook Marketplace or Avito offers a “new” Ledger at a good price. Inside the box is a card with 24 words already printed, and instructions to use them. Whoever printed those words controls the wallet, and drains it as soon as you deposit. A genuine device always asks you to generate your own phrase at setup. Other tricks include modified firmware and swapped chips, which are harder to spot.
There is also a privacy angle. In 2020 Ledger’s e-commerce database was breached and customer names, phone numbers and postal addresses were leaked, which led to phishing and threats. And in 2025 the alleged organiser of the kidnapping of a Ledger co-founder in France was arrested in Tangier. The lesson for Morocco: have the parcel delivered discreetly, do not post photos of your device, and do not talk about your holdings in public groups.
What happens to your crypto if you die?
Nothing happens automatically, which is why the backup is a family question. In most Moroccan families money is a shared affair. Savings, property and debts are discussed between spouses, parents and siblings, and inheritance follows fixed rules under the Family Code. Crypto breaks that pattern, because it can sit on one person’s phone with no paper trail. If that person dies, the family may not even know the coins exist. No bank, notary or adoul can recover a self-custody wallet without the phrase.
A good backup plan answers three questions.
Where are the words? Write them on paper or stamp them on a metal plate, never in a phone note, a photo, an email or a WhatsApp message to yourself. Keep two copies in two different places, for example at home and with a trusted relative in another city. Humidity and fire matter more than hackers for paper copies.
Who knows the wallet exists? Tell one trusted person, such as a spouse or an adult child, that there is a crypto wallet and where the backup is kept. They do not need to know the words. A sealed envelope with instructions is often enough. If you write a will, mention that the asset exists and how to find it, but do not copy the phrase into a document that several people will read.
What if one person goes rogue? For larger amounts, split trust. Trezor supports Shamir backup, which divides the recovery into shares so that, for example, any two of three are needed. A multi-signature wallet achieves the same goal on-chain. These options add complexity, so try a restore with a small amount before you rely on them.
If your coins sit on an exchange instead, heirs can sometimes claim them, but expect a slow process with death certificates, proof of kinship and translated documents. Write down which platforms you use, in the same sealed envelope.
USDT networks: TRC20, BEP20 or ERC20
USDT is issued on several blockchains. The token has the same dollar value everywhere, but each network has its own addresses, fees and quirks. When you withdraw from an exchange or receive from a P2P merchant, you have to choose the right one.
| Network | Blockchain | Indicative cost | Gas paid in |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRC20 | TRON | About $1–2 | TRX (energy) |
| BEP20 | BNB Smart Chain | About $0.10–0.30 | BNB |
| ERC20 | Ethereum | About $1–10+, spikes at peak | ETH |
Network fee comparison, 2026 These ranges come from third-party guides and move with network load and token prices. Exchanges also set their own withdrawal fees, which can differ from the raw network cost. The exact figure is always on the withdrawal screen.
Three practical rules save most Moroccan users from expensive mistakes.
Hold a little gas. In a self-custody wallet, sending USDT on TRON needs TRX, on BNB Chain needs BNB, and on Ethereum needs ETH. A wallet full of USDT with zero gas token cannot move anything. Keep the equivalent of a few dollars in the native coin.
Match the network on both ends. TRON addresses start with T, while BNB Chain and Ethereum both use addresses starting with 0x. That shared format is the trap: an ERC20 deposit address and a BEP20 one look identical. If you send BEP20 USDT to an exchange deposit address that only credits ERC20, recovery is slow at best and impossible at worst.
Test first. Send 5 USDT, check it arrived, then send the rest. It costs one extra fee and avoids losing a month’s salary.
For buying and selling, network choice matters less, because P2P trades on Binance, Bybit or OKX settle inside the platform’s escrow. It matters as soon as you move coins out. Our P2P guide covers the buying side and our cash-out guide the selling side.
A simple setup for most people in Morocco
- Keep trading funds on an exchangeOnly what you plan to trade in the next few weeks. Turn on two-factor authentication with an app, not SMS.
- Install one self-custody appTrust Wallet or OKX Wallet from the official store page. Write the phrase on paper and test a restore.
- Add a hardware wallet when savings growOrder from the official store, budget for customs, and generate the phrase yourself on the device.
- Write the family noteOne sealed envelope: which wallets and platforms exist, where the backup is, who to contact. Not the words themselves.
- Review once a yearCheck the backup is readable, update the note, and confirm the person you trust still knows where it is.

FAQ
What is the best crypto wallet in Morocco?
There is no single best one. For small amounts and daily P2P use, a self-custody app such as Trust Wallet or the wallet built into Binance or OKX is practical. For savings you intend to keep for years, a hardware wallet such as a Ledger or Trezor bought from the official store is safer. None of these is licensed in Morocco.
Can I buy a Ledger in Morocco?
Not from an official local shop. We found no official Ledger store or authorised reseller based in Morocco, and we could not confirm on Ledger's site that it ships here. People usually order from the official store abroad, bring one back from Europe, or buy from a local seller, which carries tampering risk. Expect customs charges on any imported parcel.
How much is customs duty on a hardware wallet in Morocco?
We could not find an official ruling. A widely cited figure is a flat 32.25% on online purchases, published by the retailer iHerb on its Morocco shipping page, not by Moroccan customs. Trezor's own help centre says the buyer pays any duties and that the courier collects them. Treat the 32.25% as indicative only.
Is Trust Wallet safe for Moroccans?
Yes, as long as you protect the recovery phrase. Trust Wallet is a self-custody app, so its safety depends on you. It has no country block and supports TRON, BNB Chain and Ethereum, the three networks used for USDT. The main risks are phishing links, fake apps and people asking for your seed phrase, which no genuine support agent will ever do.
Which USDT network is cheapest from Morocco?
BEP20 on BNB Chain is usually the cheapest, often a few cents in network costs, followed by TRC20 on TRON at roughly one to two dollars. ERC20 on Ethereum is the most expensive. Always pick the network that both the sender and the receiver support, and send a small test first.
What happens to my crypto if I die?
Nothing automatic. No bank, notary or exchange can recover coins held in self-custody without the recovery phrase. If your family does not know the wallet exists and where the backup is, the coins are lost for good. Coins on an exchange can sometimes be claimed by heirs, but expect a long process with death certificates and legal documents.
