Kenitra at a glance
- Kenitra’s economy runs on industrial salaries: the Stellantis plant and the Atlantic Free Zone suppliers employ thousands of engineers, technicians and operators.
- That makes bank-transfer P2P from a payroll account the dominant crypto route here, not cash.
- There is no crypto ATM, exchange office or meetup in Kenitra. Rabat, 40 km south, has none either.
- The main risks for salaried users are frozen accounts after a fraudulent trade, card blocks, and paying a premium of about 6% without realising it.
From garrison town to car capital
Small, regular P2P purchases from a payroll account are the usual route in Kenitra: you order USDT on Binance, Bybit or OKX, pay by Attijariwafa, CIH, BMCE or Banque Populaire transfer, and receive the coins from escrow. At our latest check, USDT cost about 10.34–10.40 MAD. Kenitra has no crypto office or ATM.
For decades Kenitra was known for its river port on the Sebou, its air base and its agricultural hinterland in the Gharb plain. That changed in 2019, when the Peugeot group, now Stellantis, opened its assembly plant in the Kenitra Atlantic Free Zone, a business park developed by MedZ, a subsidiary of the CDG group.CDG · Atlantic Free Zone Wiring, seating and components suppliers followed, including Lear and Fujikura.
The plant reached about 200,000 vehicles a year by the end of 2020. In July 2025 Stellantis inaugurated an extension worth EUR 1.2 billion, including EUR 702 million invested with suppliers, designed to double vehicle capacity. The site employs about 3,100 people directly and produces 350,000 engines a year. It also builds small electric vehicles such as the Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks-e and Fiat Topolino, whose output rose from 20,000 to 70,000 units a year in January 2025.FNH, 16 Jul 2025
A note on the headline number you may see quoted: several reports give 535,000 units as the plant’s future capacity. That total includes the small micromobility vehicles, not only cars, and one trade outlet presents it as a target for around 2030.Journal de l’Automobile We could not confirm that this capacity has actually been reached at the time of writing, so treat it as an objective rather than a current output.
Who uses crypto in Kenitra
Three groups stand out, and they behave differently.
Engineers and technicians. Industrial jobs in the free zone are salaried, formal and paid by bank transfer. These users tend to be numerate, comfortable with apps and wary of anything that looks like a scam. Many approach crypto as a dollar savings tool: a few hundred or a few thousand dirhams of USDT a month, as a hedge against the dirham or as an experiment with Bitcoin. Some have colleagues in France or Spain and hear about exchanges through them.
Students. Ibn Tofail University is Kenitra’s public university, with more than 33,000 students according to Times Higher Education, plus engineering and business schools such as ENSA Kénitra.Times Higher Education Students are curious and online, but they have small budgets and are the main target of “signal groups” and paid trading courses.
Commuters to Rabat. A sizeable share of Kenitra’s workforce commutes to the capital for public-sector and services jobs. Their crypto habits look much like Rabat’s, where many users are civil servants with a strong instinct for compliance. Our Rabat crypto guide covers that angle.
How a salaried user in Kenitra buys crypto
The route is the same as anywhere in Morocco, but a payroll account gives it a particular shape.
- Verify on one P2P marketplaceBinance, Bybit and OKX all list USDT/MAD ads. Complete identity verification with your CIN or passport before you trade.
- Pick an ad that names your bankAttijariwafa and CIH appear in the most ads, followed by BMCE and Banque Populaire. A same-bank transfer usually arrives in minutes.
- Pay from your own account, with no commentSend exactly the amount shown, from an account in your name, and follow the platform’s instructions for the transfer reference. Never let anyone else pay for you.
- Confirm and wait for releaseThe seller releases the coins once they see the money. A typical trade takes 15 to 45 minutes.
- Convert or withdrawSwap USDT for Bitcoin on the exchange, or move it to a wallet you control.
When we last checked, the best buy prices for USDT were around 10.34–10.40 MAD across Binance, Bybit and OKX. With the reference dollar rate around 9.73 MAD, that is a premium of about 6%. Our USDT/MAD P2P guide explains how to read an ad, check a seller’s completion rate and avoid fake receipts.
Why not simply use your salary card? Because it rarely works. Large exchanges and card on-ramps block Moroccan-issued cards for crypto, and spending your annual e-commerce allowance on crypto would conflict with the Office des Changes’ position. The guide to crypto and Moroccan bank cards goes into the details.
Where to keep what you buy
A payroll saver accumulating USDT month after month needs a home for it. Some users keep coins on a large exchange, and our guide to where to buy crypto in Morocco ranks the main ones; others prefer self-custody. CEX.IO is one option Moroccans use: it has operated since 2013, holds FinCEN registration and US state money-transmitter licences (NMLS 1804170), and runs an EU entity in Spain. It accepts Moroccan accounts, but Visa and Mastercard deposits are not available for Morocco, so you fund it with crypto. Remember that no exchange is licensed by a Moroccan regulator. For long-term savings, read our crypto wallet guide before you choose.
Open an account, send the USDT you bought on P2P and convert to BTC whenever you decide.
Licensed in several jurisdictions · external linkWhat are the main risks for salaried crypto buyers?
Engineers tend to worry about hacks. In practice, the problems we hear about in Morocco are more mundane, and they hit salaried people harder because their payroll account is their financial lifeline.
A frozen payroll account. If a seller pays you, or you pay a seller, with money stolen from a third party, the victim’s complaint can lead the bank to block the account involved. For someone whose rent and car loan run through that account, even a two-week freeze is painful. Trade only on escrow marketplaces, with counterparties who have long, clean trade histories, and never accept payment from a name that differs from the buyer’s profile.
Volume that does not match your income. A technician earning MAD 9,000 a month who moves MAD 150,000 in a month will draw questions from the bank, and possibly from the Office des Changes. In 2026 the Office sent formal notices to residents over P2P crypto trades made between March and August 2025, giving them 30 days to explain.TelQuel Keep a simple log of every trade.
Workplace “investment clubs”. In industrial cities, crypto schemes often spread through colleagues: a WhatsApp group from the night shift, a “friend of a friend” who manages money. If someone offers to trade on your behalf, or promises a fixed monthly return, treat it as a scam. Our crypto scam guide lists the patterns.
Getting around: Al Boraq, Rabat and the north
Kenitra sits on the Al Boraq high-speed line between Tangier and Casablanca. ONCF’s announced journey time from Tangier to Kénitra is about 50 minutes, and conventional trains link Kenitra to Rabat, about 40 km away, many times a day.Wikipedia · Al Boraq That connectivity explains why Kenitra residents often do their banking, paperwork and shopping in Rabat. For crypto it changes nothing: prices are set online and the same banks operate in both cities.
It matters only if you want a physical Bitcoin machine, which Morocco does not have. The closest are in Spain, and the fastest way there from Kenitra is the train to Tangier and the ferry to Algeciras, or a flight. Our Bitcoin ATM page lists what we found for each city.
Within Kenitra, bank branches and Cash Plus or Wafacash agencies concentrate in the city centre and along the main avenues of the newer residential districts, while the free zone itself lies outside the city. None of them sells crypto; they are simply where the dirham leg of a P2P trade happens.
How do you cash out crypto in Kenitra?
To turn crypto back into dirhams, you place a sell order on P2P. The buyer sends money to your account or through Cash Plus, and you release the coins only after the money appears in your own banking app. For salaried users, the cleanest approach is to cash out in amounts that make sense next to your salary, and to keep receipts. Our guide to selling crypto in Morocco covers the order of steps, and the crypto tax page explains why there is still no DGI ruling on gains.
Our verdict for Kenitra
Kenitra is one of the most “formal” crypto markets in Morocco: lots of bank accounts, regular incomes, technically minded users and little need for cash deals. That makes the safe route easy to follow. The danger is complacency. A payroll account is valuable, and a single bad trade with a fraudulent counterparty can put it on hold.
Our advice is simple: one marketplace, one bank account in your name, modest amounts that match your payslip, and a log of every trade. If you are starting from zero, our step-by-step guide to buying Bitcoin in Morocco takes about ten minutes to read.

FAQ
How do I buy crypto in Kenitra?
Through online P2P marketplaces, like everywhere in Morocco. You buy USDT from another user on Binance, Bybit or OKX, pay by transfer from your own Attijariwafa, CIH, BMCE or Banque Populaire account, and the platform releases the coins from escrow. You can then swap USDT for Bitcoin. No crypto shop or office operates legally in Kenitra.
Should I join a crypto investment group at work in Kenitra?
No. In industrial cities, crypto schemes often spread through colleagues, in a night-shift WhatsApp group or via a friend of a friend who manages money. If someone offers to trade on your behalf or promises a fixed monthly return, treat it as a scam. The AMMC has repeatedly warned about unlicensed advisers and fraudulent trading platforms.
Can my employer or bank see that I buy crypto?
Your employer cannot, but your bank sees every transfer. A P2P payment shows as an ordinary transfer to a private person. Regular, modest amounts consistent with your salary rarely raise questions. Large or frequent transfers to many strangers can trigger checks, so keep a record of each trade.
Can I buy crypto with my Moroccan salary card online?
Usually not. Major exchanges block Moroccan Visa and Mastercard cards for crypto purchases; CEX.IO, for example, lists Morocco among countries where card deposits are unavailable. Using your annual e-commerce allowance to buy crypto would also conflict with the Office des Changes position. Bank-transfer P2P is the practical route.
Is it better to buy crypto in Kenitra or in Rabat?
There is no difference. Prices are set online, so a USDT bought from Kenitra costs the same as one bought in Rabat or Casablanca. The only local factor is which bank branches and Cash Plus agencies are near you, and Kenitra has all the major networks.
How much do Kenitra users typically pay above the official dollar rate?
In our most recent snapshot, USDT sold for about 10.34 to 10.40 MAD on the main P2P markets, while the reference USD/MAD rate was around 9.73. That is a premium of roughly 6%. It reflects how hard it is to obtain dollars legally from a dirham account, not a platform fee.
