Crypto in Meknes: a quieter market with the same rules

Meknes is an agricultural capital, a university town and a city with a visible military and civil-service presence. It is not a crypto hotspot, and we will not pretend otherwise. What it does have is a national P2P market reachable from any phone, a dense cash-agency network reaching into the Saïss countryside, and two bigger neighbours an hour or two away.

Meknes in brief

  • There is no crypto office, ATM or shop in Meknes. Buyers use the same national P2P market as the rest of Morocco and pay the same price.
  • What is smaller in Meknes is the local network: fewer experienced traders, no events and no community you can meet. That makes scams harder to spot.
  • Bank apps give access to hundreds of P2P sellers. Al Barid Bank appeared in only two of 610 ads on the day we checked.
  • The agricultural economy means seasonal, cash-heavy incomes. Crypto is a poor home for money needed for the next harvest.
  • Law 42.25 is not adopted. The 2017 Office des Changes position still applies.

Meknes in context: farms, students and uniforms

Buying crypto in Meknes works exactly as in Casablanca, at the same national price: you order USDT on a P2P marketplace and pay from a bank app, ideally Attijariwafa or CIH. At our latest check, the best offer was about 10.34 MAD. The city has no crypto office or ATM, and Al Barid Bank users find few sellers.

Meknes is the imperial city people often drive through on the way to Fez, which sits about an hour to the east. It deserves more attention than that. The 2024 census counted 695,662 inhabitants within the municipal boundaries. The HCP’s urban perimeter gives a lower figure, around 562,000, so be careful when comparing sources. The city shares the Fès-Meknès region, about 4.47 million people, with its larger neighbour.

Its economy is rooted in the Saïss plain, a farming region of cereals, olives, fruit and vines. Every spring the city hosts the Salon International de l’Agriculture au Maroc (SIAM), the country’s largest farm fair. The 18th edition ran from 20 to 28 April 2026, two days longer than usual. Organisers expected more than 1,500 exhibitors from about 70 countries and over 1.1 million visitors, with Portugal as guest of honour.TelQuel, SIAM 2026 Those were forecasts. We found no final attendance figure.

On the edge of the city, the Agropolis agro-industrial park, developed by the CDG subsidiary MedZ, covers about 140 hectares. A May 2026 article presented as sponsored content said it had more than 125 client companies and over 22,000 jobs. Treat that as a promotional figure.

Meknes is also a university and institutional town. Moulay Ismail University reports more than 82,000 students, including 994 from abroad, across ten institutions in Meknes and Errachidia.Moulay Ismail University The Royal Military Academy is based in the city, and the army, the police and the civil service are visible employers.

None of these groups is a natural crypto crowd. There are farmers with seasonal cash incomes, students on modest budgets and employees whose jobs value discretion and rule-following. That shapes the market more than any statistic.

Is it harder to buy crypto in Meknes?

Not on price, but on everything around the trade. It is tempting to say Meknes has a small crypto market, and that claim needs unpacking. The price is not local. A buyer on Binance, Bybit or OKX in Meknes sees exactly the same order book as someone in Casablanca. In our most recent snapshot, the best Binance P2P offers sold USDT at 10.34 to 10.36 MAD. That was about 6% above the official dollar rate of roughly 9.73 MAD. Meknes buyers did not pay more for living away from the big cities.

What is smaller is everything around the trade. We found no crypto meetup, conference or student club focused on crypto in Meknes. The INPT blockchain days were held in Rabat in February 2025, and the larger tech events happen in Casablanca or Marrakech. There are fewer experienced friends to ask, fewer people who have already been through a P2P dispute and fewer local voices warning about the latest scam. In a big city, word spreads quickly when a Telegram “investment” channel collapses. In Meknes, it often does not.

That is why we think the most useful advice for Meknes is not about where to buy, but about how. Learn the process properly before you put real money in. Our beginner’s guide to buying Bitcoin in Morocco covers account opening and a first trade. The P2P guide explains escrow, completion rates and disputes. Read both before you trade.

CashPlus, Al Barid Bank and the countryside

Meknes sits at the centre of a rural region, and many families have relatives in villages across the Saïss, towards El Hajeb, Azrou or Sidi Kacem. Money moves between city and countryside mostly through cash agencies and the postal bank. Cash Plus had more than 5,200 agencies at the end of 2025, and 23% of them were in rural areas. In about 180 localities it is the only financial access point.Challenge, Cash Plus 2025 Al Barid Bank, the postal bank, is often the first account for people outside the big banks’ reach.

This matters because P2P sellers choose which payment methods they accept, and they strongly prefer the big banks. Here is what we counted across 610 USDT/MAD ads on Binance P2P at our latest check:

Payment methodAds listing itWhat it means in Meknes
Attijariwafa / CIHAbout 270 eachWidest choice, fastest trades
Bank of Africa / Banque Populaire168 / 121Good choice
Cash Plus93Workable, slower, watch for fake receipts
Wafacash10Very few sellers
Al Barid Bank2Almost no choice on Binance

OKX also listed Poste Maroc among its MAD methods, so a postal-bank customer is not completely shut out. In practice, someone with only an Al Barid Bank account will struggle to find a good offer, and is more likely to be steered towards off-platform deals by “helpful” contacts. Say no. A trade outside the platform has no escrow. If you trade regularly, an account at one of the large banks is the simplest fix.

For cash deposits, the pattern is the same as anywhere. You deposit dirhams at an agency in the seller’s name, send the receipt through the platform chat and wait while the seller confirms with the agency. It takes longer than a bank transfer, and it is the method most exposed to fraud. That is especially true when the “seller” asks you to deposit for a third person. Our guide to P2P scams in Morocco shows what a fake confirmation looks like.

Should you go to Fez or Rabat to buy crypto?

No. People in Meknes often say they “go to Fez” or “go to Rabat” for things the city lacks, and crypto is no exception, though not in the way you might think. There is no physical crypto market to visit in either city. What the bigger neighbours offer is everything around it.

Fez, about an hour away by road or train, has a larger student and freelance population and more people who have learnt crypto the hard way. Our Fez guide covers freelancers and first-time buyers in detail. Rabat, about two hours west, is where the regulators sit: Bank Al-Maghrib, the AMMC and the Office des Changes. It is also where law 42.25 is being finalised, as our Rabat guide explains. If you ever need a lawyer who knows exchange regulations, you are more likely to find one in Rabat or Casablanca than in Meknes.

For the trade itself, stay home. Travelling to meet a “trusted seller” in another city is one of the classic set-ups for robbery or cash fraud. P2P works the same from a flat in Hamria as from an office in Agdal.

Harvest money, salaries and the case for caution

Agricultural income is lumpy. A good olive or fruit season can bring in a large sum at once, and that money has to cover the next season’s seeds, fertiliser and labour. Putting it into a volatile asset that has no legal protection in Morocco is a poor match. Bitcoin can fall by a third in weeks. USDT is more stable in price, but it carries platform and legal risks and costs about 6% more than the official dollar rate to buy.

The legal backdrop is the same as everywhere. Since 20 November 2017 the Office des Changes has considered crypto transactions an exchange-control infraction.Office des Changes In 2026 it sent formal notices to residents suspected of P2P crypto flows, with 30 days to justify them. Draft law 42.25, which would create licensed providers supervised by the AMMC, was published in November 2025 and is still not adopted. Our guide to the legal status of crypto tracks it.

People in uniform and civil servants are a familiar part of the city’s workforce. We found no public text that sets crypto rules specific to them, but their employers may have internal conduct rules. Check before you trade, rather than after. If something goes wrong, the question will not only be about money.

If you still decide to buy, do it the way you would treat any risky saving. Use a small amount you would not need for a year, paid from your own bank account and documented.

Selling and storing from Meknes

Selling uses the same rails in reverse. A buyer transfers dirhams to your own bank account, and you release the USDT only after the credit appears in your banking app. When we last checked, the best buy-back prices on Binance were 10.26 to 10.29 MAD, with about 400 buyers’ ads. Bank-app sellers had plenty of choice, while cash-agency and postal-bank sellers had far less. Our cash-out guide covers frozen accounts and bank questions.

Between trades, many users leave their coins on the exchange where they bought them. Others spread them across a second platform or a self-custody wallet; our ranking of where to buy crypto in Morocco compares the main options. CEX.IO is one platform Moroccans can open. It has operated since 2013, is registered with FinCEN in the US (NMLS 1804170) with state money-transmitter licences, and has an EU entity in Spain, CEX.IO Europe S.L. Visa and Mastercard deposits are not available for Moroccan users, so you fund it with crypto bought on P2P. No exchange holds a Moroccan licence.

Our verdict for Meknes

Meknes is a quieter crypto city than Casablanca, Tangier or Fez, as a look through our other Moroccan city guides shows, and that is fine. The price is national, the tools are the same and a phone gives you access to the whole market. What the city lacks is a community that spreads warnings and know-how. Buyers here have to do more of their own homework.

Our advice is short. Use a large bank’s app rather than cash or the postal bank when you can. Never meet anyone in person. Keep harvest and salary money out of volatile assets. If you work in uniform or in public service, check your employer’s rules first. Do those four things and the smaller market costs you nothing.

FAQ

Is it harder to buy crypto in Meknes than in Casablanca?

Not in terms of price, because P2P order books are national and a buyer in Meknes sees the same offers as one in Casablanca. What is smaller is the local network: fewer people to ask, no events and fewer sellers willing to wait for a cash deposit made in a small agency. Paying from a bank app removes most of that difference.

Can I buy USDT with Al Barid Bank in Meknes?

Sometimes, but options are scarce. In our most recent snapshot, only two of 610 Binance P2P USDT/MAD ads listed Al Barid Bank, against about 270 each for Attijariwafa and CIH. OKX also listed Poste Maroc as a method. If your only account is at Al Barid Bank, expect fewer sellers and check each one carefully.

Is there a Bitcoin ATM or crypto office in Meknes?

No. We found no Bitcoin ATM, crypto office or shop in Meknes, in Hamria, the medina or elsewhere, at the time of writing. No crypto ATM exists anywhere in Morocco. Anyone offering a physical crypto counter in the city is operating outside the law.

Can farmers in the Meknes region save their harvest money in crypto?

Technically anyone with a verified account can buy USDT, but crypto is volatile and Morocco offers no legal protection. The Office des Changes has considered crypto transactions an infraction since 2017. For seasonal income that pays for seeds and labour, a bank account or a regulated savings product is the safer choice.

Should I travel to Fez or Rabat to buy crypto?

There is no reason to travel to buy crypto, because there is no physical market in either city. P2P works from your phone in Meknes. People do look to Fez and Rabat for other things, such as a bank branch with more services, a lawyer who knows exchange regulations, or an event at a university.

Do soldiers or civil servants in Meknes face special crypto rules?

We found no public text that sets crypto rules specific to soldiers or civil servants. The general legal position applies to everyone. Employers in the security and public sectors may have their own internal conduct rules, so people in those jobs should check with their administration before trading.
