The short answer
- There is no confirmed Bitcoin ATM in Morocco in any city. We checked operator maps, archived Coin ATM Radar country lists and the Moroccan press.
- The reason is regulatory. The 2017 Office des Changes statement still applies, and the crypto bill 42.25 is not law yet.
- The closest machines are across the Strait of Gibraltar, in Algeciras and Málaga.
- For cash, Moroccans use P2P with CashPlus or Wafacash deposits. For larger amounts they use bank-transfer P2P or OTC desks.
Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Morocco?
No. We found no confirmed Bitcoin ATM anywhere in Morocco when we last checked, and no evidence that one was ever installed. The nearest machines are in southern Spain, a ferry ride from Tangier. To buy Bitcoin with cash, Moroccans use P2P marketplaces where sellers accept a CashPlus or Wafacash deposit.
A Bitcoin ATM (often shortened to BTM) is a kiosk that takes banknotes and sends Bitcoin to your wallet, or the reverse. In Europe and North America they sit in petrol stations, tobacco shops and malls. Coin ATM Radar is the directory the industry relies on. It tracks a little under 40,000 machines worldwide, and Spain alone accounts for roughly 390 of them.
Morocco is simply absent from that map. We could not open Coin ATM Radar’s live country page from our network, so we went to its archived country list instead. On the snapshot of 19 May 2023, the only African countries listed were South Africa (19 machines) and Nigeria (2). Morocco has never had a country page in the archive at all.Coin ATM Radar · archive We then searched English, French and Arabic news for any installation or removal and found none. One French-language article from 2021 illustrated a “guichet bitcoin” with a photo that was taken in Marseille.
If you see a listing claiming a “Bitcoin ATM in Casablanca”, look closely. Usually it is a bank ATM tagged by mistake, or a crypto seller who calls their phone number an ATM.
Why are there no Bitcoin ATMs in Morocco?
The machines are missing for legal reasons, not technical ones. On 20 November 2017 the Office des Changes, Morocco’s foreign-exchange regulator, published a statement. It said that transactions in virtual currencies breach the exchange regulations and expose people to the penalties in force.Office des Changes The next day Bank Al-Maghrib, the AMMC capital-markets authority and the Ministry of Finance followed with a joint warning.AMMC
A Bitcoin ATM operator needs three things that this framework rules out. The first is a bank account to deposit the cash it collects. Moroccan banks follow BAM’s stance, so they will not open one for a crypto business. The second is a cash-in-transit contract, and those companies work for banks. The third is a legal basis for the activity, which does not exist yet. Draft law 42.25 would create licences for crypto-asset service providers, supervised by the AMMC. It was published for consultation in November 2025, and in July 2026 Bank Al-Maghrib said work on it was still ongoing.Morocco World News Read the full legal status of crypto in Morocco for the timeline.
Where is the nearest Bitcoin ATM to Morocco?
If you really want a physical machine, the closest ones are in Spain, and the best route depends on your city. Spanish operators have had to verify identity on every crypto ATM transaction since 1 January 2025, so carry your passport. The counts below come from Coin ATM Radar snapshots published in 2019–2020 and from search snippets. Machines move, so treat these figures as a starting point and check the live map before you travel.
| Moroccan city | Nearest machines | How you get there | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tangier | Algeciras (1 listed in 2019), Málaga (7–15 in 2019–20) | Ferry Tanger Med → Algeciras, about 1.5 h | The only route where a day trip is realistic |
| Tetouan | Same as Tangier | Bus to Tanger Med or Ceuta, then ferry | No machine found in Ceuta itself |
| Nador / Oujda | Málaga (Almería not verified) | Ferry Nador → Almería or Motril, then road | No machine found in Melilla |
| Rabat, Kenitra, Casablanca | Málaga, Madrid | Flight 1–1.5 h | Cheaper to use P2P than to fly |
| Marrakech, Agadir | Málaga, Canary Islands | Flight | Tourists usually bring crypto bought at home |
Coin ATM Radar · Spain Counts for specific cities come from dated news reports, not from the operators. For the options closer to home, see our local guides to buying crypto in Tetouan, Oujda and Kenitra.
Our verdict: a ferry trip to a machine only makes sense if you are already travelling. Spanish BTM operators typically charge a markup of several percent over the market price, and you also pay for the trip. Buying from P2P at home usually costs less.
Five real alternatives to a Bitcoin ATM in Morocco
What Moroccans actually use instead of ATMs is far from marginal. Chainalysis ranked Morocco 24th worldwide for grassroots crypto adoption in 2025, and first in North Africa.Hespress, citing Chainalysis Almost all of that flow goes through the channels below, ordered from the most cash-like to the most institutional.
1. P2P with a CashPlus or Wafacash deposit (the closest thing to a cash ATM)
On P2P marketplaces you trade directly with another person, and the platform holds the crypto in escrow until the seller confirms your payment. Some sellers accept payment by depositing dirhams at a cash agency in their name. At our latest check we counted dozens of USDT/MAD ads on Binance P2P that accept Cash Plus. A smaller number accept Wafacash, and a handful accept Western Union. Cash Plus alone runs more than 5,200 agencies, nearly a quarter of them in rural areas, so this rail reaches places where a BTM never would.
You end up with USDT, a dollar stablecoin, which you can then swap for BTC in seconds. Expect to pay a few percent above the official dollar rate. Our P2P guide walks through the full process and shows how to spot fake receipts.
2. P2P by bank transfer: fastest and most liquid
Most of the Moroccan P2P market runs on bank transfers. Attijariwafa and CIH appear in more ads than any other method, followed by BMCE (Bank of Africa) and Banque Populaire. In our most recent P2P snapshot, prices were around 10.34–10.40 MAD per USDT to buy and 10.22–10.29 MAD to sell, across Binance, Bybit and OKX. A typical trade settles in 15–45 minutes.
3. A regulated exchange account for holding and converting
The coins you buy on P2P should not sit in a random wallet you do not understand. Many Moroccan users keep them on a large exchange with clear licences abroad. CEX.IO, for instance, has operated since 2013. It holds US money-transmitter licences and FinCEN registration, and runs an EU entity in Spain. Two caveats apply. It does not accept Moroccan Visa or Mastercard deposits, so you fund it with crypto. And no exchange is licensed by a Moroccan regulator. Our ranking of the best crypto exchanges in Morocco lists the alternatives.
Open an account, deposit the USDT you bought and convert it to BTC at spot price.

Above roughly $100,000, international OTC desks such as Kraken’s or Bitget’s quote a fixed price for the whole block. They settle in USD or EUR, never in dirhams, so this route only works for people with foreign accounts and a legal basis to use them. Details are in our Bitcoin OTC guide for Morocco.
5. Selling crypto back to cash
The same P2P rails work in reverse. You sell USDT and the buyer sends dirhams to your bank account, or to a CashPlus agency for pick-up. Release the coins only after the money is visible in your own banking app. Our cash-out guide covers limits, bank questions and the safest order of steps.
Bitcoin ATM fees vs P2P costs
People who use BTMs abroad often underestimate the cost. The table below compares typical costs. Spanish ATM markups are indicative because operators publish them on the machine screen rather than on a central list. The P2P figures are from our own snapshot.
| Method | Typical cost vs market | Speed | ID check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin ATM in Spain | ≈ 5–12% markup + travel | 10 minutes at the machine | Passport + phone (since 2025) |
| P2P bank transfer (MAD) | ≈ 6% above official USD/MAD | 15–45 min | Platform KYC |
| P2P CashPlus deposit | ≈ 6–9% above official USD/MAD | 30–90 min | Platform KYC |
| Exchange spot swap USDT→BTC | 0.1–0.25% | Seconds | Platform KYC |
The premium on Moroccan P2P is not a fee taken by the platform. It reflects the fact that dollars are hard to get legally from a dirham account, so sellers price in their own risk and effort. That is also why the gap widens when the Office des Changes tightens enforcement.
Using a Bitcoin ATM abroad: a quick checklist
If you are in Spain or Portugal and want to try a machine, the process is the same everywhere:
- Find a live machineOpen Coin ATM Radar on the day and filter by “buy” and “BTC”. Call the venue if the listing is older than a month.
- Prepare your walletGenerate a receiving address in a self-custody wallet. See our wallet guide.
- Verify your identityExpect a passport scan and an SMS code. Limits are higher once you are verified.
- Check the rate on screenCompare it with the live price in our BTC to MAD converter before you insert cash.
- Keep the receiptIt is your proof of purchase if you are ever asked where the funds came from.
Will Morocco get Bitcoin ATMs?
Possibly, but not soon. As reported in the press, draft law 42.25 is modelled on the EU’s MiCA framework. Under it, an ATM operator would most likely need an AMMC licence as a crypto-asset service provider, with full anti-money-laundering obligations and reporting to the ANRF financial intelligence unit. In MiCA countries, ATM networks only appeared after licences were issued and banks agreed to serve the operators. Morocco would likely follow the same order: first the law, then licences, then bank relationships, and kiosks last.
Until then, be wary of anyone advertising a “Bitcoin ATM in Marrakech” or a “crypto cash office in Casablanca”. No such business can operate legally today, and our scam guide lists the patterns we see most often.

FAQ
Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Casablanca?
No. We found no confirmed Bitcoin ATM in Casablanca, or anywhere else in Morocco, in operator lists, archived Coin ATM Radar data or Moroccan press at our latest check. Listings that claim otherwise usually show bank ATMs or machines in Marseille or Spain.
Why are there no Bitcoin ATMs in Morocco?
Because the legal framework does not allow one yet. Since November 2017 the Office des Changes has treated payments in virtual currencies as a breach of foreign-exchange rules. A Bitcoin ATM needs a bank account, a cash-in-transit partner and a licence, and none of those are available to a crypto operator until draft law 42.25 is adopted.
Where is the nearest Bitcoin ATM to Morocco?
In southern Spain. Older Coin ATM Radar counts showed one machine in Algeciras and up to 15 in Málaga. Both cities are a ferry ride from Tangier. No machine was found in Ceuta or Melilla. Check Coin ATM Radar on the day you travel, because machines move.
Can I buy Bitcoin with cash in Morocco without an ATM?
In practice, yes: through P2P marketplaces where the seller accepts a CashPlus or Wafacash deposit. In our most recent snapshot, Binance P2P listed dozens of USDT/MAD ads that accept CashPlus. You buy USDT first and then convert to BTC. The legal grey zone described in this guide still applies.
Do Spanish Bitcoin ATMs require ID?
Yes. Since 1 January 2025 Spanish operators have had to verify identity for crypto ATM transactions, so bring your passport and expect a phone-number check. Limits are higher once you are verified. Operators show their markup on the machine screen, so compare it with the live market price before you insert any cash.
